Telecommunication service providers are increasing challenges related to the environment and climate change, which are the result of environmental impacts and disasters. These issues demand collaboration across all sectors to prevent and mitigate their effects.
Therefore, environmental and climate change management is necessary, particularly energy management and greenhouse gas emissions reduction throughout the supply chain. It also includes climate change adaptation, such as floods and heatwaves, which can impact the stability of networks and the continuity of service provision.
Balancing business growth with environmental responsibility requires strategies for energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, water stewardship, waste management and biodiversity protection. It also involves defining measures, projects, and innovations to reduce impacts and manage natural resources efficiently.
Energy and Climate Resilience
Climate change presents both significant risks and opportunities for businesses. As True continues its transformation into a Telco-Tech company, climate-related considerations are integrated into the Company’s strategy, governance, and risk management processes, particularly as digital infrastructure expansion drives increased electricity consumption.
The Company assesses and discloses its climate-related risk management performance in alignment with the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Sustainability Disclosure Standards – Climate-related Disclosures (IFRS S2), which build upon and further enhance the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). This reporting framework reflects the Company’s approach to managing climate-related risks and opportunities while enhancing transparency and supporting informed stakeholder decision-making.
True has established science-based climate targets, including achieving Carbon Neutrality for Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. In addition, the Company has committed to reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 42% and Scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030, and achieving Net Zero emissions across its value chain by 2050, compared with the 2020 base year. These targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and are aligned with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C pathway.
Data Center Efficiency
As digital infrastructure becomes increasingly central to telecom operations, data centers are emerging as major contributors to overall electricity consumption. Recognizing this, the Company systematically integrates environmental considerations into the planning and management of its data centers, with a focus on energy efficiency, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction, and environmentally responsible operations.
To manage rising energy demand and support sustainable growth, the Company improves data center energy efficiency by optimizing PUE, while increasing the share of renewable energy to reduce GHG emissions and advance decarbonization goals.
In terms of resource and waste management, the Company has applied the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) to optimize resource utilization. This includes reducing operational waste, as well as promoting the reuse and recycling of IT equipment and data center infrastructure.
Additionally, the Company incorporates green building and environmentally responsible design principles into the development and enhancement of its data centers, aligning with international standards and best practices. This approach not only improves energy efficiency but also minimizes environmental impacts over the long term.
Water Stewardship
True has established an ambitious target to reduce water withdrawal per unit of revenue by 45 percent by 2030, compared to base year 2020. Additionally, we assess water shortage risks using aqueduct tools developed by the World Resource Institute (WRI).
True actively manages water resources by implementing a comprehensive water management plan, particularly at office buildings nationwide which are a key area of water withdrawal. Through regular water audits in each office, True identifies opportunities to improve water efficiency and implements water conservation plans. Working with a building manager to guarantee that wastewater discharged from our office buildings meets all legal requirements for treatment, ensuring its safe release into public canals without impacting nearby communities.
Moreover, the company collaborates with True Properties, an external office building landlord, to jointly achieve the water reduction target. True Properties is responsible for implementing water management measures across office sites, including installing and upgrading water-efficient equipment and air-conditioning systems, as well as executing water reuse projects. The company focuses on driving behavioral change through employee training and internal awareness campaigns to jointly achieve the 2030 water-reduction target.
CIRCULAR ECONOMY: WASTE MANAGEMENT
The Company recognizes the challenge of waste generation within its operations and technology changes and actively manages waste, both general waste and electronic waste (e-waste) by implementing the principles of the circular economy and the 3Rs Framework (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle). This comprehensive approach aims to minimize waste disposal, maximize resource efficiency throughout the supply chain, and to achieve zero e-waste to landfill by 2030.
Tracking waste data, including type and weight, across the organization is essential for measuring operational efficiency and evaluating progress towards waste reduction goals. To empower employees and ensure their active participation, True implements training programs and engaging campaigns that promote awareness and proper waste separation practices.
ISO14001 STANDARD
The Company is committed to responsible environmental management by integrating environmental considerations into its operations and decision-making processes. To ensure systematic and effective environmental performance, the Company implements an Environmental Management System (EMS) in accordance with the ISO 14001 standard across its office buildings nationwide.
The Company continuously monitors and improves its environmental performance through regular assessments of resource consumption, including electricity consumption and water withdrawal, as well as waste management practices. Internal and external audits are conducted to verify compliance and identify opportunities for improvement.
In addition, environmental awareness and training programs are provided regularly to strengthen employees’ understanding of environmental responsibilities and support effective implementation of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
